PS3 MKV – How To Play MKV on PS3

MKV is a container format that is widely used for delivering HD video contents which up to 1080p. The problem is that many media devices cannot natively play files in the MKV file format. The PlayStation 3 (PS3) is one of them.

Even though PS3 doesn't support MKV files by default, you can still get the play on PS3 by converting MKV files to PS3 playable formats.

1. Load MKV Video(s)

  • MPEG-2 TS(MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AC3(Dolby Digital), AAC LC)

  • MPEG-2 TS(H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, AAC LC)

  • AVI: Motion JPEG (Linear PCM); Motion JPEG (μ-Law)

  • AVCHD (.m2ts / .mts)

  • DivX/ WMV/ VC-1(WMA Standard V2)

Note:

  1. Even though MP4 is listed as a supported format for PS3, many users still find some of their MP4 videos cannot be played on PS3.

  2. To play WMV format files, you must go to Settings > System Settings and toggle on Enable WMA Playback.
