How to Restore Files from Backup on Windows 10/8/7

If you have files or folders missing or deleted, you can restore files and folders from the backups you have made on your computer or external hard drive. Windows provides two files backup features - File History and Windows Backup.

If you have backed up Windows files with one of the features, follow the instruction below to recover your deleted files. If you can't find the deleted files from the backup or have trouble in restoring the backup, you can use FonePaw Data Recovery to get back the files you need without backup.

Restore Files from Backup on Windows 10/8/7

To restore Windows backup, you should first figure out what kind of backup you have created. It takes different steps to restore a Windows backup or a system image backup.

1. Restore a System Image Backup

A system image backup contains all settings, programs, and files on your computer hard drive.

Step 1: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.

Step 2: Click Restart now.

Step 3: When the computer restarts with Advanced options, click System Image Recovery.

Step 4: Follow the on-screen instruction to restore your Windows PC from the system image backup.

If your computer can't start right now, you can boot your computer into the Automatic Repair screen and restore your PC from the backed up image.

2. Restore Files from Windows Backup

Step 1: Open Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Backup and Restore.

Step 2: Click Restore my files.

Step 3: Click Browse for files or Browse for folders to look for files you want to restore from the backup.

Tip: If you need to restore a backup made on another computer from an external hard drive, Click "Select another backup to restore files from" and select the files you want to restore from the backup.

If you have backed up your files via File History. There are 3 different ways to restore your backed up files with File History.

1. Restore File History from Settings

Step 1: Go to Settings > Updated & Security > Backup.

Step 2: Under the Back up using File History, click "More options" > "Restore files from a current backup".

Step 3: Select the deleted or lost files and click the Restore button to get them back.

2. Restore File History from Control Panel

Step 1: Click Control Panel > System & Security > File History.

Step 2: Click Restore Personal Files.

Step 3: Select the date and the files you want to restore.

Step 4: Click Restore.

Tip: Restore File History to New Computer

You can also transfer files from one computer to another with File History. You can restore File History backup on an external hard disk from another computer with the following steps.

Step 1: Plug in the external backup drive and open Control Panel > System & Security > File History.

Step 2: Select "I want to use a previous backup on this file history drive".

Step 3: Select your File History backup and click Turn on. The computer will start to make a backup of your new computer. Wait until the backup to complete.

Step 4: Relaunch File History and click Restore Personal Files. You can not only see the new backup of your current Windows installation but also the previous backup from another computer on the external hard disk.

Step 1: Open File Explorer and navigate to the location of the file.

Step 2: Right-click the file and select Restore previous versions.

Step 3: Select the backed-up version to restore.
