How to Download and Install iOS 12 Public Beta on iPhone, iPad
You can now download and install iOS 12 public beta on iPhone, iPad via Apple's Beta Software Program. I myself have installed iOS 12 beta on my iPhone 6 yesterday and it works like a charm!
As you may have known, the main focus of iOS 12 is performance improvement. And based on my experience with my iPhone 6, I would have to say Apple has done a wonderful job this time. After updating to iOS 12, my old iPhone 6 runs significantly smoother, the apps load faster and I haven't noticed any bugs, battery or memory issues that were found in iOS 11 last year.

The following steps are recommended by Apple and can protect your iPhone/iPad from data loss or other iOS update problems to the maximum extent possible

Step 1 Check iOS 12 compatible devices
First of all, check if your iPhone, iPad is compatible with iOS 12. Here are the devices that support iOS 12.
iPhone: iPhone X, iPhone 8/8 Plus, iPhone 7/7 Plus, iPhone 6s/6s Plus/6/6 Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 5s
iPad: 12.9-inch iPad Pro 2nd/1st generation, 10.5-inch/9.7-inch/9.6-inch iPad Pro, iPad Air 2, iPad Air, iPad 5th generation, iPad mini 4/3/2

Step 2 Back up & Archive the Backup
In case that the installation doesn't go well, you are suggested to back up your iPhone, iPad with iTunes before update. And in case that you may want to downgrade to iOS 11, you should archive or copy the backup so that it won't be overwritten by new backup. Backups made on iOS 12 will not work when your device goes back to iOS 11.
Open iTunes, connect your device to iTunes and click Back up Now to make a backup.
When the backup is finished, if you are using iTunes on a Mac, go to Preference > Device, right-click the backup and select Archive.
Tip: Since iTunes on Windows doesn't have the Archive option, to avoid the backup being overwritten, you may copy the backup to other location: go to User\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\ and copy the whole folder to other location.
Step 3 Download iOS 12 Beta
On your iPhone, iPad, go to https://beta.apple.com. Click Sign in and sign in with your Apple ID and password. If this is your first time to visit the Apple Beta Software Program, read and accept the Apple Beta Software Program Agreement.
Click Enroll your iOS device > Download profile. When asking your permission to show the configuration profile, click Allow.
When you see the iOS 12 Beta Software Profile, tap Install and enter your passcode. Follow the on-screen instruction to continue. Restart your iPhone when asked.
Step 4 Install iOS 12 Beta
After the phone reboots, go to Settings > General > Software Update and you'll see iOS 12 Public Beta. Tap Download and Install.
That's it. The iOS 12 will installed on your iPhone/iPad. You can then access all new features.
It takes 30 minutes to 1 hour + to download and install iOS 12 public beta on your iPhone, iPad. The installation time varies depending on the following factors:
Your device. If you have lots of data on the device, you'll need to spend more time on backing up the iPhone, iPad.
Your current version of iOS on your device. It takes longer time to download iOS 12 to devices with older version of iOS.
Wi-Fi connection speed.
Generally, it takes longer time to download a public beta than a official version. So when you feel like the iPhone, iPad is stuck in iOS 12 installation, just give it some time.
If you unable to install iOS 12 beta because an error occurred on updating, or when you tap to install iOS 12 beta, nothing happens, you can change to install iOS 12 with iTunes.
Step 1 Download IPSW file of iOS 12 beta from Apple official site.
Step 2 Get the latest version of iTunes on your computer and launch it.
Step 3 Connect your iPhone to computer and make a backup with iTunes.
Step 4 Put the device in DFU mode.
Step 5 On iTunes, select your device, press Option button on Mac (Shift button on Windows) while clicking on the Upgrade button.
Step 6 Choose the downloaded IPSW file to install iOS 12 beta on your device.
