Since Google officially separated Google Photos from Google Drive, the two storage services do not keep photos in sync. That means photos you have saved on Google Drive will no longer be uploaded to Google Photos or vice versa.
According to Google, syncing photos in Google Drive and Google Photos confuses some users and it is redundant to have two backups. But, if you want to transfer and organize the disordered photos from Google Drive to Google Photos, here are four solutions for you.
- Solution 1 Upload photos from Google Drive to Google Photos
- Solution 2 Move photos from Google Drive to Google Photos via Backup & Sync
- Solution 3 Sync photos with Goggle Drive using Google Photos
- Solution 4 Create a Google Photos folder
No matter you are transferring photos in Android, iPhone, or computer from Google Drive to Google Photos, follow the steps below on a computer would be more convenient.
First, make sure you have signed up your google account and go to photos.google.com.
Second, click the Upload button in the top right corner and choose to upload from Google Drive.
Third, you will see the thumbnails of the photos.
Check the photos you need one by one > Upload. This would be the simplest way to move photos from Google Drive to Google Photos.
Backup & Sync is an official app for Mac and PC that backs up files and photos safely in Google Drive and Google Photos. Once you have downloaded Backup & Sync on your computer, follow the instruction to install.
In the second step, choose the backup folder and check the box "Upload photos and videos to Google Photos" > Next.
When the installation finishes, it will create a synchronized folder called Google Drive on the desktop. The folders you have chosen, including Google Photos, will be backed up and synced automatically.
However, it also has a limitation: update latency.
If you have plenty of photos and files to sync, it might take a long time (even more than 24 hours) to finish the process. The uploading may stop if your internet connection is not so good.
If you think backing up on Google Drive and Google Photos simultaneously is convenient for you, you can enable Google Drive in Google Photos.
Step 1 Go to the official website of Google Photos.
Step 2 Navigate to Settings and toggle on "Google Drive - Sync photos & videos from Google Drive".
On your phone:
Step 1 Open the Google Photo app on your phone.
Step 2 Navigate to Settings > Back up & Sync and make sure you are backing up to the correct account.
Step 3 You will see the Device Folders. Choose the folders and turn on the toggle on the right. You can sync images from other folders in the Google Photos app, including Google Drive.
You can also create a folder on Google Drive and move photos into it.
Step 1 Log in to your Google Drive account and go to Settings.
Step 2 In the General tab, check "Create a Google Photos folder: Automatically put your Google Photos into a folder in My Drive".
Step 3 Then find and right-click on the photo you want to transfer > Move to. Choose the Google Photos folder > Move. Your photos will be uploaded to Google Photos.
The methods above may not work perfectly and the update will delay if you have lots of files to sync.
Therefore, you can choose to download the photos and upload them from your computer to Google Photo as well. Here I'd like to introduce a handy transfer tool to you: FonePaw DoTrans.
It not only transfers all photos in your phone to the computer in one click, but also move music, videos, and messages among different devices. If you are a Windows user, it would be so convenient for you to move files among iOS, Android, and the PC.
In all, though Google Drive and Google Photos are uncoupled, you can upload photos in Google Drive to Google Photos on its official website directly.
