Smart Lock: Unlock Your Mobile Device Automatically

Screen lock keeps our phones safe but sometimes when I am in a secure environment, I should like to spare the trouble of unlocking the phone repeatedly. And Smart Lock on Samsung, which can automatically unlock Samsung devices in trusted place or with trusted voice/trusted device/on-body detection, is designed to fill the need. If Smart Lock is still new to you, follow this tutorial to set up Smart Lock on your Samsung Galaxy S5/S6/S7/S8/J7 to unlock phone screen easier and faster.

What is Smart Lock?

Smart Lock is first introduced by Google to Android Lollipop 5.0. Android device running on Android Lollipop/Marshmallow/Nougat and above, such as Galaxy S8, S8 Plus, S7, S6, S5, J7, have Smart Lock feature built in. There are four ways to use Smart Lock on Samsung devices.

On-body detection: keep your Galaxy phone unlocked when you are carrying the phone in your hand, pocket, purse.

Trusted device: unlock your Galaxy phone with Bluetooth/NFC devices.

Trusted place: keep your Galaxy device unlocked at home, workplace or other locations that you have added as trusted places.

Trust voice:use voice recognition to unlock your phone. Just say OK Google to unlock the phone.

On-body Detection: How It Works and How to Use

By using the accelerometer on your Samsung S8/S7/S6/S5, On-body detection enables the phone to detect continuous movement. When On-body detection is on, once you unlock your phone, it will stay unlocked until it is locked and motionless. You can turn on On-body detection on Samsung in these steps.

  1. Go to Settings > Lock screen and security > Secure lock settings > Smart Lock.

  2. Enter your pin, passcode, pattern.

  3. Choose On-body detection and toggle on the button.

  4. The phone will warn you that On-body detection can't distinguish between you and some else so there will be arisk that someone may access your phone when it is unlocked.

  5. Tap Continue to enable On-body detection smart lock on your Samsung.

  6. When you don't need the feature, you can follow the above steps to turn off On-body detection.

Some users concern about battery drain after enabling On-body detection. In fact, it should not be a concern. I have tried the feature on Samsung Galaxy S7 for several days and haven't noticed any effect on battery.

Use Trusted Devices to Unlock Galaxy S8/S7/S6/S5

By adding a trusted device, such as Bluetooth watches, fitness trackers, or car speaker systems to your S8/S7/S6/S5, your phone will keep unlocked when the device is connected.

  1. Tap Settings > Lock screen and security > Secure lock settings > Smart Lock.

  2. Enter your pin, passcode, pattern.

  3. Choose Trusted devices > Add Trusted Device.

  4. You can then choose to add a Bluetooth device or NFC device.(You need to enable Bluetooth or NFC on your Samsung phone to add a Bluetooth/NFC device.)

  5. Choose the device and tap Yes when a pop-up asking if you would like to add a trusted device.

If you don't the device to unlock your phone later, you can choose the device and tap Remove Trusted Device to remove the device.

Use Trusted Place to Unlock Galaxy S8/S7/S6/S5

You can choose a location, such as your home, as a trusted place, where your phone can stay unlocked when it is in there. But you should notice that a trusted place has a range of up to 80 meters. So your device may remainunlocked when you are out of the house. To set up trusted places on your Galaxy S8/S7/S6/S5, follow these steps.

Tip: To set up trusted places, you need to enable your Galaxy phone's location on Settings > Location and turn on high accuracy or battery-saving location mode.

  1. Open Settings > Lock screen and security > Secure lock settings > Smart Lock.

  2. Enter your pin, passcode, pattern.

  3. Choose Trusted Places.

  4. Tap Home and select the location of your home. Or tap Add trusted place to choose a location from Map as the trusted place.

  5. Your phone will remain unlocked in the trusted places.

If Trusted places do not work on your Lollipop/Marshmallow/Nougat Samsung device, make sure that you have enabled WiFi and set location in high accuracy mode. And instead of entering your precise location, choose the location that Google Map pinpoints.

Unlock Galaxy S8/S7/S6/S5 with OK Google

By adding a trusted voice, you can use Ok Google to unlock your Galaxy phone, do Google search and more. To use trusted voice to unlock your phone, please:

  1. Open Settings > Lock screen and security > Secure lock settings > Smart Lock.

  2. Enter your pin, passcode, pattern.

  3. Choose Trusted voice to set up voice recognition.

  4. Toggle on Say OK Google any time and follow the instruction to help the phone to recognize your voice.

What If Smart Lock Not Working

If Smart Lock doesn't work on your device or you could not find the smart lock menu. Make sure you have done the following thing.

  1. Go to Lock Screen and Security > Other security settings > Trusted agents;

  2. Toggle on Smart Lock.

Also with Smart Lock, when you don't use your phone for 4 hours or after your phone restarts, you'll need to manually unlock your phone with your PIN, pattern, or password.
