What is Smart Lock?

Smart Lock is first introduced by Google to Android Lollipop 5.0. Android device running on Android Lollipop/Marshmallow/Nougat and above, such as Galaxy S8, S8 Plus, S7, S6, S5, J7, have Smart Lock feature built in. There are four ways to use Smart Lock on Samsung devices.

On-body detection: keep your Galaxy phone unlocked when you are carrying the phone in your hand, pocket, purse.

Trusted device: unlock your Galaxy phone with Bluetooth/NFC devices.

Trusted place: keep your Galaxy device unlocked at home, workplace or other locations that you have added as trusted places.

Trust voice:use voice recognition to unlock your phone. Just say OK Google to unlock the phone.

On-body Detection: How It Works and How to Use

By using the accelerometer on your Samsung S8/S7/S6/S5, On-body detection enables the phone to detect continuous movement. When On-body detection is on, once you unlock your phone, it will stay unlocked until it is locked and motionless. You can turn on On-body detection on Samsung in these steps.

  1. Go to Settings > Lock screen and security > Secure lock settings > Smart Lock.

  2. Enter your pin, passcode, pattern.

    Access Smart Lock Menu

  3. Choose On-body detection and toggle on the button.

  4. The phone will warn you that On-body detection can't distinguish between you and some else so there will be arisk that someone may access your phone when it is unlocked.

  5. Tap Continue to enable On-body detection smart lock on your Samsung.

    Turn on On-body Detection

  6. When you don't need the feature, you can follow the above steps to turn off On-body detection.

Some users concern about battery drain after enabling On-body detection. In fact, it should not be a concern. I have tried the feature on Samsung Galaxy S7 for several days and haven't noticed any effect on battery.
